It's capable of very subtle (much like the Studer) and much more heavy-handed when you start playing with the gain staging. Obviously, the UAD models have many more parameters to tweak, so you can get really microscopic, but the Softube just has a really pleasing tone, to my ears. It's very 'controlled' and a complimentary flavour to my UAD Studer and Ampex. I'm using it today, having bought it yesterday. So thumbs up Softube- you`re much better at tape emuing than emuing guitaramps. Plugin-manager in Nuendo says 0 latency and is very low on cpu. The Tape has been very stable so far for Nuendo 7 and Studio One 3.5 VST on a mac. I guess I could have turned even more on the many parameters on the UAD Ampex to get the sound, but with Tape it took me a minute. The other ones I have from Slate and UAD gets either a little foggy, distorted, or harsh when pushed a bit. To my ears Tape is for now the best tape emu I have with the TP J37 very close but not as flexible and can sometime become a little boomy. I could also remove some EQ on a vocal-track and instead with Tape`s HFT and Color-button I could sit the vocals a bit better in the mix. I often find double bass hard to mix in a busy arrangement, but Tape helped me out here. In another mix with double bass I got the instrument to stand out a little more with more attack without getting klancy. I got a bit boring bass recording become a bit more alive and bring forward OH without the cymbals getting splashy.
Listening to ST Tape mixes on their homepage did not give me any clue of how it sounds since I could not hear any difference.īut it actually sounds very nice- firm bass, softening a bit harsh transients especially on elec guitars. So I learned from the start to forget about the VU-meter. Tape has to be pushed a great deal to get the sound I`m looking. Tested the Waves-tapes earlier on and did not like it so I dropped it for now. Putting it on several instruments and comparing it to TP J37 Nebula, UAD Ampex/Studer and VTM. For installation problems please head on to another ST Tape thread close by.īeen testing it since it came out, both on mastering masterbuss and mixing. This thread is for those who have installed it and tested it.
